When I was principal of a school in Pretoria we had several families from Norway and Sweden. The idea that mothers and fathers got paid leave (and these were diplomatic families posted in South Africa) was eye opening. The value placed on family, health, and the future was clear. There is a great deal made of Finnish education now and some of it rightfully due. But the equally important values that underpin the system are what you so clearly bring out here. I know I am lumping several issues and countries together but the Scandinavian have some of this ethos and fundamental insistence on the societal value of equality in common. Always a work in progress but a solid foundation to build on.
