we don't always know a transformational leader when they appear. They are flawed, seem inadequate, make missteps, don't always find the beat right away. That is why, so often, people turn to the loud and the proud, the boastful and the vain. They seem so self assured so surely they will lead. We want to judge on past performance when it may not actually give insight into the character that will emerge. These are crucible times and the leaders who emerge now will likely fall into two camps, the opportunists who will take what they can, and those who might lead us toward what Lincoln called the angels of our better nature---who we might still be. This will not be done with a singular vision but with the with willingness to roll up sleeves and define, create, and hold at all costs the common ground.
