The essay- nothing like what they teach you in high school, I am thinking of Wendell Berry, Annie Dillard, John McPhee, E.B. White, and the short stories that have hit home long after you finish reading them. The novel obsession delivers a lot of volume without much punch, encouraging a sort of writerly flab. But then we have plenty of short game examples who excel in saying nothing with little (our Twit in Chief being one). But then I think of the line in the Be Good Tanyas song, “The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs.”
