Mosaic rooftop — Barcelona — October 2017 — photograph by Ben Weinberg

Wrapped up in the national pastime,
read the comments before the headline,
foam finger pointing from the sideline,
click to join the cause,
share it, double dog dare it, pass it on,
end up in a snarl, traffic jam, on the way to the frontline
desperate to be on time, first in line,
part of the wave
ready to stop on a dime before the buck stops
here.
And we know it will.

This wave,
the one we’re riding,
been building forty years and more,
chance to stop it,
that was years ago,
so eager to be on the cutting edge,
desperate to be on time, first in line,
so caught in the wave of righteous indignation,
got to wonder if,
a proactive stance means no backwards glance
and so,
and so,
what then I ask?

Let’s take a walk, you and I.
Leave behind the chatter,
hand in hand
alive at last to the world around us,
treasure seekers;
So much in a glance.
So much in a smile.
So much in the hand in mine.

Here, among time’s long sweep,
caught in the rising tide,
the wave cresting along the shore,
but this we have,
this shimmering now, this moment that will never come again.
