Privilege is like water for fish, they are only aware of it when they are out of it. So many are awarded the benefits of a system that was set up in their favor and accept it as the natural order. Unaware, unwilling, to work out the calculation that the sum of their efforts could not have gotten them where they are without a coefficient being applied, a coefficient that grossly imbalances the equation for others. In a education Masters degree program the class that sparked the most debate and denial was the class on race/diversity/equity in American education. I have lived in South Africa and the US, the first thing people want to tell you is that they are not racist. The terrible irony is that they do not actually know what the word means.
