My knowledge of cults and cult ideology is not very comprehensive, but I see the connection and parallel with group-think and separate narratives. The attacks on the press, the repetition of slogan and simplistic phrases, the demeaning nicknames, these are all ways of establishing and reinforcing a narrative that people find easy to connect with, it satisfies in the sense that it is reaffirming that the problem is “them”. Authoritarian structures are simply cults on a large scale. The symbols, the mythology, the demonizing the other as the locus of all “our” problems. The safe, false comfort of easy solutions. The togetherness of the chanted slogan. These are the ominous drumbeats of our times. Thanks for this analysis Shannon.

Cheers,

Ben
