Come closer now

Follow ways and lines
Glimpses of lives

The long main street quiet after lunch
But for a few
Coats unzipped
Or carried on arms
She’s walking back to the hospital
Blue coat
White hair
Quiet, deliberate
She knows the way

In the hospital, a doctor walks the corridor
Seen in flashes
Window to window to window
Clipboard in hand
Pauses at a door
Shoulders rise as he breathes
The children are just leaving quietly
The old man asleep in the chair
The doctor’s hand on his shoulder
Strong, gentle, knowing
Wakes him

From above

The pattern of
Homes and farms
Lines of traffic flowing north and south
Tide under the bridge
Wind in the bay

Closer once again

Three figures walk out the hospital door
Just outside they gather
Stand near
Arms around one another
Heads bent close
White and reddish and black their hair
Quiet their voices
Sharing the news
Holding on tight

Others flow in and out of the building
Like water they swing round and past the three

The sun breaks through to find them
They tilt their heads back to receive it
And laugh
Finding comfort
