John Steinbeck has a character in East of Eden, a sheriff, he tells about his plans when he was younger, how he was going to fish and hunt when he stopped working, only now, now that he has reached this time in his life, he doesn’t want to do those things anymore. There I times I think of that with great sadness, other times with a wry smile.
I quit school when I was 19 and took off for more than 20 years. Lived on an island, was a lobsterman, a builder, a farmer. Maybe I retired early. No 401K in any of those years, no savings, but a wealth by other measures. I see kids driven towards goals now and wonder at all they might be missing, wonder more and where they will find themselves.
great piece, thanks,
