it is scary strange to have freedom be equated to the head start we were granted in the race

scary strange to have self reliance mean taking the largest and first helping from the common plate

so far from the independence of the small holding farmers who created commons and gathered to cut wood or raise a barn.

so far removed from the stewardship that independence rests on, the preservation and wasting not

where have all the flowers gone, the song asks —
the elegance of simple virtues service, cleanliness, making do and making for, the self reliance of Thoreau — not standing on another’s shoulders that he or she must bear you and all your weighty needs
— these flowers are wilted in the garden, weed choked and stunted, hardly recognizable,

we have created a nation that complains more for bullied burgers than bullied children .

As Pogo (via Walt Kelly) said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.”
