I lived for a number of years on a small island in the Gulf of Maine. I was a lobsterman both inshore around the islands and offshore, In the 70s and 80s between the boom in sea urchin populations and the heavy pressure from scallop draggers, the kelp beds almost vanished. At the same time the cod, flounder, clams and even blue mussels dwindled. We used to eat from the sea but quite suddenly seafood became rare. A real irony when you live on an island.
