I don’t know if Kindness and Caring have moved away from us or we away from them. I see them in the schools I have worked in. See also the stress that erodes them, depletes the energy they require. Irony is that is is practicing these qualities and the acts of kindness and caring that connect and sustain us. Stress and anxiety, fear there won’t be enough to go around and it is us who will out of a seat when the music stops. These cast our eyes down and still our hands from lifting toward another. My sense is that in the harder times coming it is kindness and caring that will get us through, that will hold us together. Without them it will be a bitter and dark struggle. The strong may well win through but without these qualities they will be a new and strange race.
