I collect all the leaves and clippings along my block for compost (feeding the decomposers). In the garden sunflower offer a perch and snack stop for birds. The raspberries have made a hedge that is always rustling, and the figs are a shared crop. In a Natural History of Vermont class years ago we explored the transition areas between field and forest for their wealth of cover and food, the hedgerow concept, something our neat lines and sterile mow zones discourage. I love the wild gardens, where food and flowers intermingle and you never know what may crop up.
