I am the head of school in an international school. The high school librarian at our school was at Columbine and just happened to run an errand at the time. I stand in front of the gate almost every morning welcoming kids, sayin good morning to parents. It is a nice thing to do but a big part of why I am there is so that there are several adults visibly checking IDs . It doesn’t make us a hard target, it just makes us a little less easy. The two security guards are armed. I am glad I am not. This is school in our modern times. No matter what it looks like out there, we have to say to every student, every day, that there is a better way, and welcome, welcome to a safe place where people care and learning comes first. As soon as we lose that, we have lost everything. Cheers to you for seeing the children in all the lonely faces. Cheers to you for caring for them, each and every one.
