Bald Eagle — Gotts island — photo by Benjamin Weinberg

I am no fan
no fanfic for me
no game day rituals
not into stats and scores
not following any team

I dislike sports metaphors
hear the chants and cringe
the energy of rivalry turns so easily
to other quarry.
See the monuments and money
wonder what if so much energy
wasn’t poured into a game.

What if barefoot children,
chasing dreams of glory
across the only ground they’re given,
hard and bare,
what if this were not the only door they’re shown.

But today, when in solidarity
brothers bend and take the knee,
I think that perhaps this,
this I could admire
this I’d stand and applaud
This score be one I follow.
