Dear Senator McCain, In the end, maybe none of us is able to live up to our ideals. I am not interested in judging. We have to have the ideals first though so action can be held up against their light. For the times you were strong and stood fast, I salute you. For the times when the political expediency of compromise seemed to be the ruling order, I would hesitate, knowing the times when in my own day I have chosen the path of least resistance and bartered the short term gain for the long term dissonance.

There is a deep and fundamental dissonance at the heart of our political life and culture. Liberty and justice for all coupled with a less than inclusive definition of all. Pursuit of happiness unmarried to stewardship or responsibility. Growth as an end in itself without an end in sight.

We stand where we are and from this point must resolve forward with new hope, new resolve, and ideals to light the way. The darker paths are close and time to choose slipping past. Stand for us, Senator. Be what you say.
