Cicada Song

They emerge to sing,
leaving behind a hollow shell,
called, they answer.
To open that way,
pry loose from your very bones.
Then to pause on the brink, flexing new wings,
dare to fly.
The life cycle we call it,
with a second grade scientist’s self assurance,
for them, a leap of faith.
