are canny ones the ones who write what everyone will believe? No, I don’t think so, they play for the crowd but don’t know the name of the tune. They run forward while looking back to make sure the pack hasn’t left them in pursuit of another. They may end up believing what they say and only vaguely remember that surely there was something else, something more, something I set out to do or be but was distracted along the way. The canny ones don’t say much. Old Morris who owned the wharf, knitted bait bags and watched for the boats to come in, he never told me much but I remember every word. In a world of tough guys he was gentle and quiet. He told me about the old days, wondered about the weather, took joy in the wind and the day. No the canny ones are easy to miss even when they stand out in the crowd. Thanks Nalini, enjoyed writing that story. ben
